Common Misconceptions About Funeral Directors

A funeral director, also known as an undertaker, is commonly misunderstood in various ways. At Simply Cremations & Funeral Services, we'd like to address and dispel some common misunderstandings and misconceptions.

1. They Are Only Concerned With Profit

While funerals can be expensive and directors earn a livelihood from what they do, different occupations allow for this without needing empathy or understanding. Funeral directors might find themselves working holidays and weekends and being mentally and emotionally exhausted. If they are in it just for the money, they are in the wrong business!

2. They Exude a "Creepy" Vibe

While some funeral directors may align with this stereotype, the majority are ordinary people who have grown far more hopeful due to their interactions with mortality.

3. They Spend All Their Days Examining Deceased Individuals

There are several misunderstandings regarding funeral directors' duties, including soothing the deceased's relatives, arranging, making phone calls, and preparing documents in a capacity similar to that of a standard office employee. They only spend a limited time with the departed unless when it is required.

4. They Are Certified Professionals

While funeral directors possess considerable experience, they are not legally required to have formal training or credentials. They will empathize with and understand their clients. They also give industry-specific advice based on their knowledge, but they are not death specialists.

5. They Are Constantly Suffering From Depression

Another misconception is that, while grieving the loss of a loved one can be gloomy, funeral directors who deal with death daily must maintain a certain level of detachment and avoid being overly emotional. While the funeral director is likely to be empathetic, they must learn to distinguish between the two to prevent the anguish connected with death.
