Canadian Military Honours
Canada has inherited a number of systems from the United Kingdom including an elaborate system of honours, awards and titles. These are based on the traditions of the British aristocracy and is referred to as the Canadian Honours System.

In this system, military veterans are celebrated and honored for their greatness. Canadian orders have evolved from medieval orders of kinghood. Take a look at some of them:
  • Order of Canada- This senior order was instituted in 1967 recognizes Canadians’ services and achievements for their country as well as humanity. This is mainly a civilian order, however many exceptional members of the military have been awarded this honour.
  • Order of Military Merit- This honour was instituted to recognize the exceptional services by members of the Canadian Forces; it was created in 1972.
  • Victoria Cross- Instituted in the year 1856 by Queen Victoria, this is the nation’s most senior award for extreme devotion to duty and bravery in the presence of enemies; to date, only 94 Canadians have earned this award.

Commonwealth Decorations

Canadians that served in major events during the 20th century were also eligible to receive commonwealth decorations for bravery; these include:
  • Flying Cross
  • Star Of Military Valour
  • Medal Of Bravery
  • Military Cross
  • Canadian Forces Decoration
  • Meritorious Service Cross

The Sacrifice Medal

This medal was created to honour the large number of people that had lost their lives in overseas operations for the country. It was the outcome of the government and the citizens demand to recognize those that have been wounded or have died in military service.
